Expert Introduction

Professor Zheng Shushen, a Chinese Academy of Engineering Academician and a world-leading authority in organ transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery, has performed over 4,000 liver transplants, including living donor liver transplants, split liver transplants, combined liver-kidney transplants, and pancreas transplants. He participated as the first assistant in the first human orthotopic liver transplant at Queen Mary Hospital of Hong Kong University in October 1991. In June 2001, he performed mainland China’s first adult living donor liver transplant using the right lobe. In 1994, he conducted a combined pancreas-kidney transplant, and in 1999, a combined liver-kidney transplant. Two recipients hold Asia’s longest survival record post-combined pancreas-kidney transplant (14 years) and mainland China’s longest survival record post-combined liver-kidney transplant (9 years). Professor Zheng is the lead specialist of the National Basic Research Program (973 Program) titled “Basic Research on Immunological Mechanisms of Chronic Graft Dysfunction.” He has published over 400 papers in international journals such as Liver Transplantation and Transplantation, with 175 indexed by SCI. He has authored several monographs, including Liver Transplantation, Pancreas Transplantation, and Management in the Perioperative Period of Liver Transplantation. He is also the chief editor of the journal Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Diseases International (SCI-indexed), the first English-language professional journal in China in the field of hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases. In 2013, he was awarded the Li Madam Science and Technology Progress Award by the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation and was named one of CCTV’s 2016 Annual Innovative Figures.
